Aye it’s been a while since I’ve done anything on here.

Been a bit preoccupied with the other blogs and businesses and what not. I guess the more they become successful the more my personnal life takes a back seat… for the moment at least. To be honest this doesn’t bother me all that much as I really enjoy my work.

So what’s new huh?
Hard work is really starting to pay off, and it’s getting to that point where I’m going to have to make some tough decisions about what and what isn’t important in my life… and then cull. Some of it will be an easy call, some not so much. We’ll see how it goes, but hey, everything happens for a reason so I’m not worried. I know what needs to be done.

It’s a pretty exciting couple of months coming up. For one, I’ve got a couple of shows brewing. The first is Happenstance presents FRESH MEET. I did the flyer (which was a bit Sagmeister inspired), as well as co-ordinate and co-conceptualise it all. It should be a heap of fun.

FreshMeet

Second one is the big event, which has been in the works for a few months now. The third stage of Extra Cheeese kicks off in August, and I’m really stoked to be involved with the people I’m working with. I just finished the flyer for this one too which involved the photo shoot I was talking about in the previous post.

The magazine has been going quite well too. Definitely needs to pick up a bit over the next weeks to get this print deadline pushed through, but I’ve been working hard behind the scenes to help with paperwork and organisation. We’ve just managed to get stocked at Ariel bookstore which I’m really happy about! I even popped in on Friday to drop them off personally to the buyer. It’s always good to put a face to the name (even though I was shit nervous for some reason and probably didn’t leave a very professional impression.)
There has also been a heap of interest from writers and people looking to intern for us so I’m looking to get those guys involved and help the branding grow. Can’t wait to the day when I can pay these people properly for their hard work and services. Start off ventures are financially tough!

Anyway, back to beer and poker. Till next time.

I hate days which I don’t use to the fullest of work potential.

No wait.
See.
That’s the problem.

I actually love days lying in bed fucking around till 1 or 2 in the arvo. Which is why I hate days lazing about because it gives me a glimpse of the carefree lifestyle I used to live. I miss those days. But then again… don’t.

It gets boring doing nothing after a while. I tend to consider myself a fairly pro-active person, so I think my head would implode if I did nothing. Shittt, I get restless if I’m not awake working by 9am.
Just another indication that I’m turning old.

Jesus, I turn 25 in a day.

I look back at my life 4 years ago and was a completely different person. Hell, I could even say the same thing for two years ago. Not just in lifestyle, but also in mentality too.
This change has been good.

I finished up the Extra Cheeese 3 photoshoot on Sunday. Once again Charlie Dennington dedicated his time and services for another creative vision of mine. Eternally grateful.
A big thanks to Adam Paquette for helping with the art direction and brainstorming the shoot with me the day beforehand.
Shout out to models Kareena & Julian, as well as Jo and Rei for helping with lighting and support on the day.
Really happy with how the visuals turned out. I’ll post some up after they are officially released for the third show.
Here’s a behind the scenes teaser from the day though.

This week will be one of the most intense weeks of my calender year. I’m really hoping it’s not a case of biting off more than I can chew.

To do list

  • Happenstance magazine launch Friday. Meeting tomorrow night to tidy up details and reiterate schedule.
  • 50-80 tote bags still to silkscreen for the mag launch. That includes ironing them too. 8-10 minutes per pag
  • Pick up/finalise contents of tote bags.
  • Magazines delivered tomorrow. Liase with shipping company.
  • Hand stamp and number each copy /1000
  • Organise spreadsheet for mailouts/promotions/advertising.
  • Extra Cheeese grant proposal due tomorrow by 6pm.
  • Extra Cheeese written proposal and visuals due by Friday to the Powerhouse Museum.
  • Meeting on Tuesday with City of Sydney to view spaces on Oxford St. for a suitable exhibition location.
  • Flood Studio to complete the lookbook for Beat Poet at fashion week. 4 day turnaround including printing.
  • Two meetings with banks tomorrow.
  • Business report for Studio to complete.

On top of this, I went to the optomitrist last week and he told me I now need glasses. I guess looking at a computer screen 10-15 hours a day for the last 4 years hasn’t helped. -1

Such is life

It’s funny in my line of work how mistakes can often end up being a good thing, and completely transform the design or artwork or whatever it is that you’re working on into a great creation.

That’s how I feel about you…

Things have lapsed a little over the past couple of weeks. For one, I’ve been incredibly distracted.
That, and the fact that we are well on track for Happenstance, so I guess it’s cool to take a bit of a backseat for a while. I was the type of student in college who does things the night before, and rips up the presentation due to lack of sleep for the prior 48 hours, so it almost feels wrong to be so ahead of my work schedule. I guess that’s what happens when you’re really into work.

flood studio is poised too. We have a couple of big jobs on the backburner, which (if all goes to schedule) will kick off within the month. I can say goodbye to social life for a while, but I’m looking forward to it. Alone time is pretty important to me anyway and it will feel good to really drill focus into work. Nothing beats that feeling of a polished job and a happy client.

Fuck sex. Lets Design.

Better yet;
Design sex. Lets fuck.

Things have been crazy lately. I got multiple projects driving me into the ground from all angles so it’s really hard to focus and get a grip on the matter at hand sometimes. Riding my bike gives me the opportunity to get away for a bit when need be.
Last night I felt like just doing that. So I hopped on my bmx and rode from Redfern to the airport. I managed to find a spot just outside the runway gates so that the planes were coming over me by about 20-30 metres. Just like in Waynes World. It was really deafening, but fantastic at the time time. I’m definitely going to do that ride again.
After a while I followed the airport circuit and came into the back-end of Tempe around the Princes Highway. Had to cut through a bit of suburbia on the way, and it made me miss a lot of things about living out of the city. Mainly being, the smells! Man, I used to love walking round the suburbs catching whisps of different home cooking at night. You don’t get any of that shit living in the inner city. It’s all masked by pollution, and noise.
I’m thinking of moving out to Marrickville after this place falls through. My lease is up in 20 days anyway, but I’ll probably hang around for another couple of months. Who knows. I move too much.
On an unrelated note, here’s a graphic that I saw on ffffound.com yonks ago. I can’t credit who did it as I have no idea. Revel in its awesomeness anyway

Extra Cheeese
www.extracheeese.com

When starting this as a uni project, I didn’t even imagine that it had the scope to get this big.
I just got off the phone from the Powerhouse Museum this morning, and there is a possibility that EC could be integrated into Sydney Design Week 09! This is going to be a manic weekend getting a rough proposal together for collaboration. Not to mention the consideration of spaces already. Then sponsors, getting submissions, finalising contributors…. ok my head hurts already. I still love it though. Late nights here we come.

On top of this, we’ve been finalising preperations for our magazine too! This has been over a year in prep behind the scenes, so it’s good to see it start to finally come into fruition.

I’m really looking forward to getting this on the road. Definitely hope to develop it into a full time career path. Working for other people has never been my thing anyway…

noage jayreatardbloodvisions1

I went and saw No Age and Jay Reatard at the Gaelic last night. I’ve been waiting for about a year to see Jay Reatard as I missed them last time they were out. So naturally, I had high hopes for the show. They ended up being a little dissapointing though. Didn’t connect with the crowd, looked (and felt) gimmicky with their hair antics, and generally had a bit of a sloppy set really. Everyone I talked to who saw them last time they were out said it was an amazing show first time round, so who knows, maybe they were just jetlagged or something.
I only got into No Age after they were billed with Reatard. Actually if I’m honest I didn’t know much about them before I bought the ticket. Shit, they were great though! I like their old and new stuff so every song hit the mark for me , but I was real glad they dropped Brain Burner. It’s great to see a band who’s so DIY with their approach to music and make it big.
